EMDR Therapy in London

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence‑based therapy that helps the brain process traumatic or overwhelming experiences so they no longer feel as distressing or intrusive.

EMDR doesn’t erase the past — it helps you relate to it differently, with more clarity, calm, and emotional distance.

What Is EMDR?

When something overwhelming happens, the brain sometimes struggles to process the experience in the usual way. Instead of becoming a memory that feels “in the past,” it can remain unprocessed — stored with the same emotions, sensations, and beliefs that were present at the time.

EMDR helps the brain complete the processing that didn’t happen at the time, allowing the memory to settle and lose its intensity.

Unprocessed memories can lead to:

  • Intrusive thoughts or images
  • Flashbacks or strong emotional reactions
  • Anxiety or hypervigilance
  • Feeling “stuck” in old patterns
  • Avoidance of reminders

What EMDR Can Help With

Trauma & PTSD

Processing specific distressing events or long-term experiences.

Anxiety & Panic

Reducing the physical and emotional intensity of panic triggers.

Phobias

Addressing the root causes of intense specific fears.

Grief & Loss

Helping with "stuck" or complicated mourning processes.

Many clients describe EMDR as helping them feel lighter, calmer, and more able to move forward.

How EMDR Works

EMDR uses a structured, eight‑phase approach. You remain in control throughout the process, and we only move forward when you feel ready.

The focus is on how the memory is stored in the body and mind — not on retelling every detail of the story unless you wish to.

Is EMDR Right for Me?

EMDR can be a powerful approach, but it’s not the only one. During your first session, we’ll explore what you’re experiencing and whether EMDR, counselling, or a combination of both might support you best.

You don’t need to decide in advance — we’ll work together to find the right path.
