First Steps: What to Expect
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. You may be unsure what to say, or simply wondering what actually happens in a session.
My aim is to make the process as gentle, clear, and supportive as possible. From the moment you get in touch, you’ll be met with warmth, respect, and a calm space where you can explore what’s going on at your own pace.
Your Free Initial Consultation
Before we begin working together, we’ll have a free initial consultation. This is a short, informal conversation (usually 15-20 minutes) where we can connect without pressure.
There is no obligation to continue — it’s simply a chance for you to get a sense of me and for me to understand how best I can support you.
During this chat, we will:
- • Talk about what’s bringing you to therapy
- • Explore what you’re hoping for
- • Discuss the types of therapy I offer
- • Decide together whether we’re a good fit
Your First Session
Your first full session is an opportunity to settle in. You’re welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. There is no expectation to have everything figured out.
In this session, we may:
- • Talk about what's been happening for you
- • Explore how you've been feeling
- • Look at what you'd like to focus on
- • Begin to understand the patterns affecting you
A Safe, Confidential Space
Therapy is a place where you can speak freely without judgement. Everything you share is held with care and confidentiality, in line with professional ethical guidelines (MBACP).
Non-Judgemental
You can simply come as you are. You don't have to be "put together" or prepared.
Steady Presence
I provide a warm, reliable space to support you in making sense of your experiences.
How Ongoing Sessions Work
Each session lasts 50 minutes and is shaped around what you bring that day. Therapy is not rushed; we move at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.
If trauma is part of your story, we’ll take extra care to build safety and stability before exploring anything deeper. You remain in control of the direction at all times.
Common areas of focus:
- Thoughts, feelings, and reactions
- Patterns in relationships or behaviour
- Grounding and regulation skills
- Reconnecting with your strengths and values
If You’re Feeling Nervous
Many people feel anxious before starting. You might worry about becoming emotional or not knowing what to say. These concerns are completely normal.
You don’t have to be brave or polished — you just have to show up. I’ll meet you exactly where you are.

I’m here to support you whenever you feel ready to begin.
